St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland
By Bindiya Apr 12, 2010

(This is a part of the 'Beautiful Places I Fell in Love With' article series.)
St Andrews Castle
My 'Beautiful places that I fell in love with' article series would not be complete without a mention of this amazing town on the east cost of Fife, Scotland. We found this town, commonly known as the 'home of golf', unexpectedly charming. The weather was cloudy the day we visited, but even then, the town seemed dreamy. As we entered, we saw a huge golf course on the left with a huge mansion-like building on it. A golf course near the sea; that caught my attention for sure. Wish I knew how to play the game though. Till that happens, what I like about golf courses is how green and clean they are.

Back to the town, well, I felt it had much to offer in terms of beauty and historical charm. As I said, the golf course (Old Golf Course) is just by the sea, actually, overlooking the West Sands beach. The St Andrews Aquarium is also located nearby making it a perfect location for a family outing. We did not get a chance to visit the Aquarium but did a quick tour of their interesting gift shop.

The St Andrews castle is nicely perched on a cliff at the coast making it one of the few castles in Scotland with a beautiful view of the sea. Its the only one I have seen actually. There are also picturesque ruins of a large cathedral near the castle. As you walk down the sloping road next to the castle, you are transported to a world before your time. Some of my photographs at the TRTS website may explain better.

We walked around the beach and golf course area and then went to see the castle ruins. By that time, hunger pangs had hit, so we took the car around the streets of St Andrews to find a bite to eat. The food was more an excuse to actually wander about the streets. We could have eaten easily at the restaurant next to the aquarium.

The streets of St Andrews made for a great visual treat with many cute looking family run shops and small cafes here and there. We chose a small crowded cafe which turned out to have great food. The crowded ones are usually a safe bet, aren't they!

This day visit was a huge success, though better weather would have brightened things up a bit more. St Andrews, this fine little town of Scotland will remain captured in my heart for a long time to come. More photographs of this place can be found in the image gallery.
